Classic Ford Mustang: Custom Ignition & Brake Booster Upgrade

This classic Ford Mustang recently came into the Brookvale workshop for some targeted upgrades under the bonnet. While these first-generation Mustangs are iconic, getting them to run cleanly and stop reliably in modern traffic often requires some smart engineering.

Our first job was sorting out the spark. We dismantled the existing stand-alone MSD distributor setup. To improve the overall reliability and output of the ignition system, we installed a remote MSD 6AL ignition module paired with an MSD Blaster 2 coil. Relocating the module and upgrading the coil provides a much stronger, multiple-spark discharge at lower RPMs, ensuring the V8 runs crisp and fires up easily every time.

Next, we addressed the stopping power. We upgraded the braking system by installing a double diaphragm brake booster. This is a significant improvement over factory setups, giving the driver a much better pedal feel and the mechanical advantage needed to pull the heavy coupe up safely.

However, upgrading to a larger booster often creates a secondary issue: high-performance V8s sometimes struggle to produce enough constant engine vacuum to operate the booster effectively, leading to a hard brake pedal. To solve this, we fabricated a custom vacuum storage tank in-house. We designed and built the tank to sit neatly tucked away right underneath the new ignition module. This custom fabrication ensures the brake booster always has the vacuum reserves it needs for sudden stops, while keeping the engine bay looking clean and uncluttered.

By combining modern electrical components with custom-fabricated mechanical solutions, this Mustang now has the reliable spark and stopping power it deserves.
