Air Con Top Up? That's Illegal.

’Topping Up’ of air conditioning/ refrigeration systems means adding refrigerant before checking for, and fixing, any leaks. This is not allowed under the Australian codes of practice for automotive refrigerant systems and is an offence and breach of a condition of holding a permit (licence or authorisation). ‘Topping up’ is also bad for the environment. If you haven’t checked for, and repaired, any leaks you will release refrigerant to the atmosphere. In a correctly functioning air conditioning system, refrigerant is not consumed during the cooling process, nor should it be released.

Why Your Air Conditioning Re-gas Takes at Least Four Hours

At Andris Automotive, we are ARC-tick refrigerant handling licence qualified and here is exactly what we are doing while your car is in the workshop.

The Nitrogen Leak Test

We start by charging the system with nitrogen and letting it sit for at least an hour to test for leaks. If there is a leak anywhere in your hoses or seals, the nitrogen will find it. If we find a leak, we repair it before moving onto the next step.

The Deep Vacuum

Once we have confirmed the system is airtight, we re-vacuum the lines. This step is about more than just clearing the pipes; it sucks out every bit of moisture. Even a tiny amount of humidity inside your AC lines can turn into ice or acid, which eventually damages the compressor. Taking the time to do a thorough vacuum ensures the internal components of your car stay in good condition.

Charging and Testing

We test the system once the precisely measured amount (by weight) of the correct refrigerant is in. Components like the pressure switches, the cooling fans, and the compressor engage only once the system is charged to the exact manufacturer specifications. We run the car to monitor the pressures and vent temperatures, making sure everything cycles exactly as it should.

We want to make sure that when you pick up your keys, your air conditioning is performing at its best and ready to handle the Australian heat.

Car air conditioning work is a specialist area and is highly regulated, so it is strongly recommended that you only have your car air conditioning system inspected and serviced by a reputable service provider.
